Having been born, raised and educated in the North East, it was never in doubt that I would remain in the region after qualifying as a consultant ophthalmologist, caring for the people of the area.
What I do
I specialise in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of age-related eyelid and tear duct conditions. These are problems that develop gradually and can have a surprisingly significant impact on day-to-day life, causing persistent watering, irritation, discomfort, and in some cases affecting vision.
The conditions I treat most commonly include:
Drooping upper eyelids (ptosis)
Excess upper eyelid skin (dermatochalasis) and upper eyelid blepharoplasty
Inward turning lower eyelids (entropion)
Outward turning lower eyelids (ectropion) and watery eyes
Drooping eyebrows (brow ptosis)
Eyelid lumps, cysts and skin growths
All procedures are performed as day case surgery under local anaesthetic, meaning patients are awake but completely comfortable throughout, and are able to go home the same day.
My approach
I believe that good medical care starts with listening. Many of the patients I see have been managing their symptoms for some time before seeking help, and I find it important to give them time to explain what has been troubling them and what they are hoping to achieve.
I will always explain what I think is causing the problem, what the options are, and what I would recommend, in plain language, without jargon. I will never recommend surgery unless I genuinely believe it is the right option for that patient, and I am equally happy to advise that no treatment is needed if that is the case.
I believe strongly in treating every patient the way I would want my own family to be treated, with respect, empathy, and honest, clear communication.
